SCHOOL: MARSHALL MIDDLE SCHOOL
School Mission Statement
It is the mission of Marshall Middle School to provide challenging,
enriching, and exciting learning opportunities for students in an
atmosphere that is caring, understanding, and appropriate to the middle
level child.
General Goals
1. We will increase the academic skills and achievement of every student.
2. We will strengthen and enhance the connections between the school and the homes of our students.
3. We will hire and retain highly qualified teachers and support staff.
4.
We will offer high quality and ongoing professional development
specifically designed to assist us in meeting our goal areas.
5. We will create and maintain a program that fosters a positive school climate.
6.
We will maintain an organizational structure that features two-teacher
academic teams, large blocks of instructional time, and purposeful
focus on building positive teacher-student relationships that will be
of benefit in both the academic and social growth of our students.
7. Our Learning Improvement Team will continue to guide us in our efforts

1: READING - The percentage of students scoring below Level 3 on the
Reading portion of the 2005-06 Washington Assessment of Student
Learning will be decreased by three percent on the 2006-07 test.
Action Plans
¨ Humanities teachers will read aloud three times a week focusing on analysis and interpretation of literary text.
¨
Humanities teachers will meet regularly in a Professional Learning
Community to focus on improvement of instruction in the area of
analysis and interpretation of literary text.
¨ Continuation of
our “Special Support” team (a special education teacher partnered with
a general education teacher) serving students with significant academic
challenges
GOAL 2: WRITING - The
percentage of students scoring below Level 3 on the Writing portion of
the 2005-06 Washington Assessment of Student Learning will be decreased
by three percent on the 2006-07 test.
Action Plans
¨
Humanities teachers will implement the WASL Content, Organization, and
Style rubric in all grade levels to track student progress.
¨
We will provide staff development opportunities for all staff in regard
to writing instruction focused on Content, Organization, and Style
.
¨
Continuation of our “Special Support” team (a special education teacher
partnered with a general education teacher) serving students with
significant academic challenges
GOAL 3: MATH - The
percentage of students scoring below Level 3 on the Mathematics portion
of the 2005-06 Washington Assessment of Student Learning will be
decreased by three percent on the 2006-07 test.

¨ Implementation of “skills booster” class for selected students in addition to their regular mathematics class
¨
Math teachers analyzed the students’ results from 2005-2006 WASL test
at pre-school staff development / LID time and set the following goals:
·
Teachers will continue to work to improve instruction utilizing WASL
format for problems and assessments in their classrooms.
· The math
PLC will design and implement grade level measurement projects to
improve student skills in the measurement strand.
· Teachers will
administer the MAP tests three times over the course of the year and
use the data to focus curriculum classroom-wide and individually.
¨ We will offer professional development for our math teachers in the following ways:
·
We will have Tom Boyce from ESD 113 or another qualified educator work
with our math teachers to understand the WASL format and identify areas
of instruction that will help students improve their test scores.
·
We will ask Alice Burman from OSD to give us more information about the
measurement strand data from the 2005-2006 WASL results.
· We will form a Professional Learning Community to provide a structure for meeting the previous goals.

GOAL 4: SCIENCE - The
percentage of students scoring below Level 3 on the Science portion of
the 2005-06 Washington Assessment of Student Learning will be decreased
by three percent on the 2006-07 test.
Action Plans
¨
Science teachers will analyze in detail our students’ 2005-06 WASL
results at our science PLC meetings and determine specific goals for
the year in relation to enhancing instruction in science.
¨ We
will continue the Science Professional Learning Community and meet to
address how to incorporate WASL format for labs / assessments to our
specific curriculum.
¨ In every science classroom we will:
· Focus on teaching science process skills.
· Include intentional and regular use of measurement in instruction.
· Focus on writing expository conclusion statements that explain the relationships in data.

Continuation of our “Special Support” team (a special education teacher
partnered with a general education teacher) serving students with
significant academic challenges
WORK TO BE DONE IN AREAS IMPORTANT TO THE SCHOOL
SAFE AND INCLUSIVE SCHOOL:
•
Continuing of the Marshall Middle School two-teacher teaming model that
by its structure and philosophy supports the development of positive
student-teacher relationships and fosters students’ sense of bonding
with school
• Continued work by our school safety committee to examine safety and security issues
• Continued work with our students in the area of understanding and celebrating diversity
TARGETED ASSISTANCE:
•
Implementation of “skills booster” class for selected students (based
on new LAP regulations identifying any student not passing the WASL as
a LAP student) in addition to their regular classes
•
Continuation of our “Special Support” team (a special education teacher
partnered with a general education teacher) serving students with
significant academic challenges
Technology implementation:
•
Piloting this year of the technology “mentor” program. Kevin Hoonan and
Malinda Lamm will be trained this summer and will be our school mentors
in working with other staff members
• Continuation of our use of pilot audio-enhanced classrooms
• Continuation of our Gen YES enrichment opportunity for students
Parent/community involvement activities to improve student learning:
•
“Revamping” of our Marshall Community Council to include a more
concentrated academic focus for parent workshops, volunteer efforts,
etc.
